id810 design group on designing with old and new: It's All in the Mix

One of the easiest ways to create a relaxed, lived-in look is to mix up your space with items old and new. This can be done in several ways:

  •  Mix period pieces with modern furniture; this blend keeps your space from looking like a showroom—a big “no-no” in design. Choose one or two elements, like side chairs or a cocktail table, to balance out your brand-new sectional.
  • Layer found collectibles or artifacts that are sentimental to you. These can be small accents like a glass vase, a distressed wood bowl or a marble Buddha. (Bonus: these are also great conversation starters!)
  • Frame vintage black-and-white photos on a gallery wall, or just one blown-up large-format photo for impact—these can be personal family photos or glamorous, stylized images.
  • Sometimes simply mixing old and new styles works too, without any of the pieces actually being vintage or antique; for instance, pair a Louis-style chair with a streamlined dining table or a large, wingback chair with a sleek sofa.
  • Breathe new life into family heirlooms by reupholstering them in modern fabric, preserving the storied structure and shape.
